Amateur’s Guide to Restoring Steel Objects

Restoring steel objects

Our range of industrial coatings can bring those valuable steel assets back to life. In the throw away world we live in, many of us get a great deal of personal satisfaction from restoring a much loved asset.

Step 1 — Surface Preparation

Remove all loose rust, scale, and old paint using a wire brush, angle grinder, or sandpaper. The more thorough the preparation, the longer your paint job will last. Wipe the surface clean of dust and grease before priming.

Step 2 — Apply a Primer

Apply a rust-inhibiting primer suitable for steel. Allow the primer to dry fully before applying the topcoat. For heavily rusted areas, a rust converter product can be used prior to priming.

Step 3 — Apply the Topcoat

Apply two coats of a durable enamel or urethane topcoat in your chosen colour. Allow each coat to dry between applications. Altex stocks a wide range of colours in-store.
